My Return to Star Wars Galaxies

Those who have been playing Star Wars Galaxies will find no surprises here. This article is for those who quit playing, like me, a couple of years ago, and also for those who have nothing else to do and just need some drivel to read.

Yesterday I signed back on to Star Wars Galaxies for the first time in almost 2 years. A lot can change in a mere 2 years, lemme tell ya.

The first thing I noticed was that there are now two new races and two new professions from which to choose since last I logged in. It was at this point that I decided to create a brand new character and conquer the learning curve, rather than use an old character and get beat up quickly (No telling where I logged off). The two races new to SWG were the Sullustans and the Ithorians. As for professions, Jedi and bounty hunters are now playable. Back in the day, when I was playing my...what was he?... my entertainer/medic/harvester, Jedi was a profession that had to be unlocked, and bounty hunter wasn't even available. It was talked about in the forums of course, but in those days, those were just dreams.

After I chose my race and profession, I was whisked away to a space station that was under attack by Imperial forces, where it was explained to me by Han Solo himself that I had to help him get me off that station by jumping up in the turret and nailing anything that moved. So I pummelled a few slow-moving TIE fighters (Twin Ion Engines for the non-Star Wars Trivia buffs) and Hans, Chewbacca, R2-D2, C3P0, and I all made it to relative safety, where I learned that the skills ladders were not the skills ladders of yesterday. In the old days (I sound like Gramps) as soon as you earned enough experience relative to what you wanted to learn, you could pick and choose what skills you wanted. Now, they're chosen for you at every fourth character level. As far as character customization goes, you better hope dressing your character in what you want him to wear fulfills that need for you, because you won't get to tweak his stats or skills. Of course, I haven't yet played one of the other professions, so it's possible that the ladder skill system still exists.

While there are still plenty of people to play with on the servers, I have noticed that there appear to be considerably fewer than once littered the streets of various places like Mos Eisley ("a wretched hive of scum and villainy") and Anchorhead.

Finally, at the time of my departure from SWG, the expansion pack "Jump to Lightspeed" was about to hit the shelves. Since that time, Sony has made it available to everyone as part of the standard gaming experience. The other two expansions, however--The Trials of Obi-Wan and the Rage of the Wookiees--still need to be purchased to be enjoyed.
